Replacing Social Media With Productive Hobbies

For as long as I can remember, my down time has been a combination of watching TV or YouTube alongside scrolling social media. My generation is the first to grow up with social media which means that it has become a habit that is ingrained in me and therefore, a real struggle to break.

Especially since lockdown, I have found myself spending excessive hours online, especially YouTube and it really hasn't done much for me.

Don't get me wrong there are positive sides, for example I learnt to decorate cakes on YouTube and I watch cleaning videos to give me inspiration. But if I am honest, the majority of my time online is spent being mindless and unproductive.

I want to make it a real goal of mine to reduce the amount of time I am online and replace that with productive hobbies that are going to improve my wellbeing.

SO HERE IS A LIST OF ALL THE THINGS I CAN THINK OF TO DO IN PLACE OF MINDLESS SCREEN TIME: (feel free to comment any others you can think of!)

  1. Bake.

  2. Write a blog post.

  3. Read a book or other peoples blogs.

  4. Make a list of recipes to try.

  5. Go for a walk in nature.

  6. Do yoga.

  7. Do a home workout.

  8. Do some crafts - paint, make cards etc.

  9. Sew.

  10. Listen to music or a podcast.

  11. Clean (I won't go into each individual cleaning task because that would be incredibly boring!)

  12. Do some self care - nails, face mask, bath etc.

  13. Adult colouring books.

  14. Do a puzzle, sudoku, crossword or word search.

  15. Groom and bath Murphy (my pup).

  16. Go out into the garden and pick weeds, cut off dead heads, mow the lawn, sweep etc.

  17. Organise cupboards and wardrobes.

  18. Journal

That is all I can think of for now but if anything else comes to me I will update this post because I really want to use it to remind myself when I can't think of anything better to do than become a screen zombie!

p.s. I am no means giving up screens all together, just reducing and being more mindful!
