Have you ever visited someones home and just immediately felt a sense of comfort and warmth that makes you want to take your shoes off and curl up on the sofa exactly like you would at home?
Most of the time, that is because your senses are being stimulated in some way or another to get that relaxation reaction from your brain.
I have been thinking a lot recently about how different homemaking tasks can stimulate the senses to get that homely feeling so I thought I would share what I have been thinking about with you.
Nothing beats the smell of home made food. It could be something as simple as the evening meal you are preparing, or it could be a special cake or treat. Today I have made my christmas cake and the whole home smells incredible, it is actually the first time I have felt excited for christmas this year! I read once that back in the old days, housewives would fry some onions if they hadn't already started preparing dinner, just as their husband walked through the door to still give off the smell that food was on it's way!
If you don't want to get busy in the kitchen every day you can create a lovely smell using candles, diffusors, essential oils or wax melts.
Cleaning - I think most people will agree that the smell of fresh laundry is up there with one of the most relaxing smells. If your home is clean you will immediately make people feel more comfortable to be there.
When the house is cluttered, it will make your family feel stressed out too. You can make everyone feel more relaxed at home by doing a quick pick up and declutter before everyone gets home.
Low lighting - this time of year I love warm lighting all around the home. I can't stand big bright lights in the evening because it ruins that cosy, warm, evening feelings.
Who doesn't love soft things? I mean seriously, I can't pass a soft blanket in a shop without feeling an uncontrollable urge to stroke it. This is why I love soft towels, bedding, blankets, pretty much anything soft within my home.
The other way you can bless your family through touch is by being openly affectionate with hugs when your husband or little ones come home. A home that gives out free hugs is a winner in my book!
An easy way to help your family relaxed in the home is by playing music. Music really has the ability to change your mood. I personally like relaxed, piano music in the evenings. I used to nanny for a family who played upbeat, happy, pop songs in the morning and they would all dance around and be silly for 10 minutes every morning and I hope to recreate this when I have children! Music really is a good mood booster!
The sound of laughter is another way to add to your home. Laughter releases stress like nothing else. So let loose, watch a comedy, be silly and let your whole family have a good giggle together.
